About the Breed

The Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla is of very similar height and build to the Hungarian Vizsla. His all-weather coat is wiry and close-lying, with a dense, water-repellent undercoat.  He has pronounced eyebrows along with a strong, harsh beard on his muzzle and an aristocratic, intelligent expression.  His hunting abilities are similar to those of his smooth-haired cousin.  His excellent hunt, point and retrieve qualities make him an amazing all-round Gundog and  an affectionate and loyal companion.  They will retrieve on land and in the water, making the most of their natural instincts.  Vizslas are excellent swimmers.

HWV's are natural hunters with an excellent ability to be trained to advanced levels. They respond to firm commands from an assertive trainer but, being a sensitive breed, they do not like harsh training methods which can harm their confidence. Being a high energy breed they need plenty of exercise for both their fitness and wellbeing.  An experienced trainer who can gain the respect of this breed by providing him with the mental stimulation and physical exercise he needs, will be rewarded with a well balanced, obedient and loyal companion.

Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas are mild mannered, very gentle dogs that are great around children and fit in well in a family environment. The Vizsla wants to be close to its owner as much of the time as possible.  Vizslas that do not get enough attention and exercise can easily become bored which can lead to the dog becoming destructive or hyperactive.  They are suited to families and individuals who love the outdoors.
